Last year, more than 440,000 Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks were reported lost or stolen and had to be reissued. If you receive federal benefit checks yourself or on behalf of someone else, the U.S. Department of the Treasury wants you to know that there are safer, more convenient alternatives: direct deposit or prepaid debit cards.
To sign up for direct deposit, call the Treasury Department’s Go Direct® campaign helpline at (800) 333-1795, go to www.GoDirect.org, or visit your bank or credit union.

To sign up for the Direct Express® prepaid debit card, or to learn about its fees and features, call (877) 212-9991 or visit www.USDirectExpress.com. No bank account is required to sign up for the card.
