Providing Clinical Care for Latina Suicide Attempters: Lessons Learned from Research with Bronx Residents
This workshop presents practical clinical tools for mental health professionals working with Latina adolescents who have attempted suicide. The workshop is organized around the description of different attempter’s functioning levels, placing special emphasis on their cultural understanding of mental health services. We reflect on the adolescent’s classification as mirroring family functioning styles. Finally, we provide clinicians with tools to plan their treatments by targeting these individual and family typologies.

WORKSHOP (D)
Nationally Recognized First Time Mothers Program: A Model for Collaborative Care
The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a unique evidence-based nationwide program serving low-income, first time mothers. The Visiting Nurse Service of New York operates a Bronx NFP program serving over 600 mothers, with approximately 40 staff. This nurse home-visiting parent education program recently incorporated a mental health professional within the staff to address the varying psychiatric and psychosocial issues that arise for the new mothers. This workshop will explore the evolution of that unique collaboration between the health, mental health and case management systems, including sharing relevant case examples. There will be a closing discussion on next steps and how to replicate this model in other programming.
