Try this activity with your afterschool group this week.

Purpose: To help students learn the "etiquette" of treating people with disabilities with respect.

Materials: "10 Commandments of Etiquette" brochure -- download below.

Activity: Break the students into groups of approximately 3-5. Have each group create a short skit that involves interacting with people with different kinds of disabilities. Have them act out the scenario doing everything wrong! Then have them act it out correctly, using the "10 Commandments of Etiquette" as a guide. Have the rest of the group comment on the “right” and “wrong” scenarios.

Sample scenarios
:
     • You notice a person who is blind and looks like they need help.
     • A friend of yours introduces you to someone who uses a wheelchair.

Discussion points: Discuss with students some of the correct and incorrect ways of interacting with persons with disabilities, and why. Use the "10 Commandments of Etiquette" as a guide.
