Try this activity with your afterschool group this week.
Purpose: To help students understand that many people, including those that they admire -- movie stars, politicians, scientists -- have disabilities.
Activity: Hand out page 1 of the Celebrity Quiz (download it below) to students. Instruct them to match the personal descriptions to the names of the celebrities.
Discussion points: Review the answers with the students (the answer key is page 2 of the Celebrity Quiz download).
- Discuss with the students that many people have disabilities, even stars, other celebrities, and many people that they know. They may not be aware of other people’s disabilities because they are not told about them, and people with disabilities can be very successful in life.
- Discuss how “disability” does not mean “dumb,” and that many people with disabilities learn compensation for their weaknesses, learn to manage them, and go on to have a successful, sometimes even famous lives!
