Try this activity with your afterschool group this week.
Purpose: To have the students think about stereotypes that are applied to people with and without disabilities, and why.
Materials: Print out one copy of the document titled “Stereotypes” for each student. Download the "Stereotypes" document below.
Activity: Have each student fill out the “Stereotypes” table (see materials needed, above). Instruct them that for each row, read the adjective and put a check mark in the column that the adjective describes: “With Disabilities,” “Without Disabilities,” or they can choose to put a check mark in both categories.
Discussion points: Ask the students which adjectives they used to describe only the “with disabilities” column, and why? This conversation will lead to the discovery that other students have used the same adjectives to describe the “without disabilities” category, or have checked off both column s. Discuss how these adjectives - both the positive and the negatives ones - really apply to everyone at different times and under different circumstances.
