New York City schools are moving toward inclusion of students with disabilities in more neighborhood schools and classrooms. With the goal of including all but students with the most severe disabilities in the city’s 1,500 neighborhood schools, the Department of Education is beginning its implementation of “special education reform” this school year with 260 “Phase 1” schools.

Jean Mizutani, RCSNEarlier this month, RCSN's Jean Mizutani was interviewed on WFAS' "Peace of Mind with Bernie the Attorney" about the changes special education reform will bring to New York City children with special needs and their families.

Jean covered a lot of information -- click here to play the interview now.

There are significant changes this year in points of access, process, and options. RCSN staff are available this summer and in the new school year to help families negotiate the changing system both through our new fall training series (more on this to come!) and by working with individual families to understand options, the new Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and how to partner with educators to assure that your child has appropriate educational services.
