In January, a NYSED Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) subcommittee submitted a proposal to the New York State Regents to pursue an alternative high school credential. Click here to see to the memo discussing the alternative credential.
Key points about the proposed credential:
- Would be called the Certificate of Attained Skills and Experiences (CASE)
- Would not be a high school diploma
- Would be available for all students – general education and students receiving special education services
- Would replace the IEP diploma - the IEP diploma would no longer be available for entering 9th graders beginning in September 2011
- Would measure skills “in relation to the NYS Learning Standards, including the State's Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Learning Standards”
- Would be phased in over 5 years and would be available to students exiting school in 2015
