Our goal is to get you comfortable in the driver's seat. Afterall, when it comes to your child, that's where you belong. How do you get there? For starters, get reacquainted with your child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). All drivers need maps, and your child's IEP is exactly that - his or her educational roadmap.
Having the IEP in hand is key to getting started, whether your child is 5 years old or 15 years old. Understanding what is on your child's IEP is crucial to making informed decisions and navigating the special education system. For younger children, having a firm grasp on IEPs will help parents assess and prioritize their children's needs, and effectively advocate on behalf of their children. For older children who will start attending their own IEP meetings, parents really need to prepare their students to understand themselves and develop self advocacy skills, in order to provide a smoother transition to life beyond high school.
If you can not find your child's IEP, there is no need to panic. Contact your school or the Committee on Special Education (CSE) for your school district to obtain a copy. If you do not understand what is on the IEP, again there is no need to panic. We understand this can be an overwhelming process, and it is OK to ask for help. Seek the help from professionals at your school - they are there to help you. You can also call us at RCSN. We are here to help you as well!
