For those parents who are about to embark on the exciting but time-sensitive high school application process, we would like to gently remind you of the upcoming Citywide High School Fairs and Borough Wide High School Fairs.

This is your chance to meet, greet, and ask questions — don't be shy!

Here are some good questions to ask of high schools at the Fairs:

  1. How does the school promote student diversity?
  2. What partnerships does the school have that are geared to help students with special needs?
  3. How many students have IEPs, and are receiving Special Education Services?
  4. Do students in special classes and general education classes participate in the same non-academic classes or extracurricular activities?
  5. What accommodations are available to students with special needs?
  6. How does the school help students transition to high school?
  7. What advisory services do they have?
  8. What academic intervention services are available?
  9. Are there remediation courses?
  10. What is the freshman year course load and homework load like?
  11. Is homework listed on the school website?
  12. Is there extra help? Tutoring? Counseling?
  13. What is the class size?
  14. How long is each period?
  15. What kind of technology is available to teachers?
  16. How does the school prepare students for the Regents exams? RCTs? What safety nets are in place for students with special needs?
  17. How does the school communicate with parents?
  18. What does the school expect from parents?
  19. If a school is on the Department of Education (DOE) Improvement List, why is it, and what is the school doing about it?
  20. Where do graduates go?
  21. What kind of support is available for selecting post-secondary options?

The Citywide High School Fairs will be held on Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4th from 10 AM – 3PM at Brooklyn Technical High School, 29 Greene Place, Brooklyn, NY,   Map

The Borough Wide High School Fairs will be held on Saturday, October 24th and Sunday, October 25th from 11AM-3PM, at the following locations:

Bronx: Theodore Roosevelt Educational Campus, 500 East Fordham Road, Bronx, NY 10458, Map

Manhattan:
Martin Luther King, Jr., Educational Campus, 122 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10023, Map

Brooklyn: Edward R. Murrow High School, 1600 Avenue L, Brooklyn, NY 11230, Map

Also, don't miss high schools' Open Houses. For many schools, priority admissions are given to those who attend the Open House - you like them, they like you. For students with special needs, this is their time to shine, show their interest in a school, and demonstrate their willingness to go the extra mile.
A high school's Open House schedule will be listed on their website. You can find high schools' websites by typing the school's name in the search box on the  NYC DOE website. Even more information is on the NYC DOE website, and, of course, if you have any questions, please email me, or call me at 212 677 4650 x14.
